Zakumi – World Cup 2010 Mascot

September 26, 2008

What Do You Think?

So clearly I’ve been under a rock these last few days, as this completely flew by me. Apparently we now have an official mascot for the Fifa 2010 Soccer World Cup.

His name is Zakumi and he is a leopard with green hair, overly large feet, and a slightly creepy grin on his face.

Zakumi - Would You Trust Him Alone With Your Kids?

I suppose in the greater scheme of things he doesn’t look too bad. I had a horrible fear that our mascot would be some sort of hybrid “Big Five” creature, with the South African national flag somehow etched over him in some sort of multi-coloured safari suit. But no, thankfully this never happened.

Check him out at his official unveiling in the video below. Also, pay special attention to Phil Masinga, who decides that “F**k it, I’m not just going to stand here and get interviewed, I’m going to do a little dance too.”:

So apparently Zakumi means “Come To Me” in one of our official languages, which is a clever little fact to throw at people when there is a lull at the dinner party.

In the upcoming months we will be bombarded with his images in media and various merchandise, which I’m not entirely comfortable with. Maybe I’m really tired right now, but he just seems to give off a bit of a “child molester” vibe.

Am I off the mark here?

The only thing remotely interesting about the mascot is it’s name …
A leopard? Well knock me over with a feather!
And as for that funky green hair and lamb chops? Oh yeah … classy!
    Pffft.

    @justBcoz,

    Agreed.

And is it just me, or is that green shorts just a little TOO skimpy?

You can quite clearly see his package.

    Not cool.

oh come on! yours at least wears some kind of pants!
remember the stupid lion mascot in germany 2006? it was wearing a shirt, but no pants. I still feel embarrassed when I think of it… (and I still can’t remember what the reason for a lion was. do we have like the largest number of lions in zoos in the world or something?)
but obviously, those mascot-designer-guys need some psychological counseling…

    @ Finja,

Don’t forget, the lion is the king of the jungle, and can thus walk around starkers if he wants.

It was a strange choice for the mascot, but then again, what exactly is the national animal of Germany?

For all intents and purposes, Germany’s national animal is the federal eagle…

I think Zakumi looks like a character out of “Happy Tree Friends”… Come on, you can imagine Zakumi appearing there and shooting the ball at Toothy and fill in the rest. :)

I am so happy that there is someone out there who feels the same way! Zakumi freaks me out just a little and it worries me greatly that he has green dreads. and the cartoon version of him is different to his fluffy version.
And I actually looked now at the skimpy shorts and they do indeed show his package. Dodgy!

Definitely the best mascot of the 21st century of any sports event!
Zakumi is sympathic, original and iconic for South Africa. Great design…
