Wordpress Spam In My Comments Section

October 21, 2008

Hating That Right Now.

I’m not going to lie, running a popular local blog has many advantages.

I get complimentary invitations to dine at various Cape Town restaurants, conduct numerous movie reviews, and am even encouraged to embark on debaucherous revelry at a Cape Town night club or two.

The worst thing about being so immensely popular however, is the amount of shitty spam comments I receive every day. You know what “spam” is, right? Allow me to educate you with this definition:

Spam in blogs (also called simply blog spam or comment spam) is a form of spamdexing. It is done by automatically posting random comments or promoting commercial services to blogs, wikis, guestbooks, or other publicly accessible online discussion boards. Any web application that accepts and displays hyperlinks submitted by visitors may be a target.
Adding links that point to the spammer’s web site artificially increases the site’s search engine ranking. An increased ranking often results in the spammer’s commercial site being listed ahead of other sites for certain searches, increasing the number of potential visitors and paying customers. [via Wikipedia]

Every day I get about 30-35 comments. Besides the regular batch of insightful comments, witty opinions, general insults and marriage proposals, 80% of what I’m getting these days are irritating spam messages, mostly to do with nursing and medical supplies.

An Example Of Spam.

An Example Of Spam.

I’m usually a mild-mannered soul, but I think it’s fair to say that if I ever bumped into someone responsible for this type of tomfoolery, I would be quite open to the idea of tying them up and beating the souls of their feet with bits of Kudu droe wors, like they do to terrorist suspects in Guantanamo Bay.

I’m pretty sure there is a rule which states that you can do this without fear of being arrested. It has to be Kudu wors though, not Springbok or Ostrich.

I could not agree with you more, bring on the rope and the wors and let the beatings commence. The camp could be called Kuduspam and of course no trial date will be required.

On a more serious note I have had to revert to comment approval to try and get rid of this issue!

Thanks Craig, I will definitely give you a shout when I manage to capture one of these bastards.

@Mike, we should dump them all into a large pit and yes, they will have no legal representation whatsoever.

I also have comment approval set up but I still need to spend 15 minutes every morning deleting all the spam that’s waiting for moderation.

Do you have the akismet spam filter plugin installed? It works like a treat and comes standard with the newer versions of wordpress.

  6. Craig October 21, 2008 12:23 pm

Agreed Stephen. Stores it and deletes after 3 weeks.

    @Stephen @Craig,

Yeah, it looks like I need to set that up asap.
