Is Funny. Very Funny.
So it was Valentine’s Day recently, and to celebrate it, I took off my pants and began rubbing myself up against The Girlfriend whilst she dined on some chicken chow mein.
Strangely enough, she didn’t seem to appreciate my loving gesture, and responded by inserting her fork into my inner thigh, something I wasn’t really keen on, as I tend to keep an artery or two in that region.
“That’s a bit excessive, don’t you think” I exclaimed weakly, as I stumbled around, battling to stay conscious. “That’s the second time you have attacked me with an eating utensil this week.” This latest attack coming a few days after she had shoved a chopstick in my ear, after reading my vent about ear buds.
“I’m bored and I feel like a good laugh” she growled. “And no, I don’t want to watch you do the Robot dance again”, she said, ironically as I began doing the Robot dance again.
Thus, (after a ridiculously long intro to the story) we found ourselves at On Broadway, to watch the Cape Town comedian David Newton, perform his new show called “Laugh”.

Cape Town Comedian, David Newton.
I had never seen David Newton perform up until that point, and usually regard local South African comedians with some suspicion, thanks to boring blokes like Barry Hilton and Allan Committee, who rely on bad impressions and weak puns to get their laughs.
Newton though, relies on sharp observational humour, and appeals to an audience looking for something beyond the Leon Schuster school of slapstick humour.
I’m not going to even try and share some of his material, as I will just butcher it, as The Girlfriend did to my leg. To summarise though, he touches on relationships, the battle of the sexes, as well as current affairs. It’s a solid set, one that left me with wet pants, as I had literally pissed myself by the end of it. The Girlfriend wanted nothing to do with me, but it was still well worth it, a great evenings entertainment.
Needless to say, if I found him funny, you will no doubt find him funny, so make a plan to go and see him. I think the show is running till the 28th February, so you still have time.
Go and see David Newton.
You will thank me in the morning.

Speaking of which, James Costello should be avoided at all costs. He is pathetic and uses stupid game show type techniques, singing and this ridiculous outfit, in attempts to get laughter. Avoid! Avoid! Avoid!

test?
Saw him on Friday night. Absolutely brilliant!
I’ve seen him host a show at Jou Ma Se Comedy before, which is why I went to his one man show.
Now if I thought he was good as Jou Ma Se, I was blown away on Friday.
That submarine argument thing, the Facebook song and the way he wrapped everything up were absolute classics!
I spent the worse entertainment night of my life recently at Newton’s show. First, most of his jokes were either homophobic or sexist; second some of his jokes were so old he had to remind people of their context (‘Remember load shedding?’) Jokes over a year old? Third he humiliated a member of the audience to such an extent that everyone at my table began to feel very uncomfortable. Picking on the audience is one thing: this was insulting, hurtful and continuous. When a member of the audience took up the mood and began to insult this member of the audience as well, it became clear that Newton was out of control of his own show. At the end he tried to imitate Eddie Izzard’s style: I know Eddie; I know all his shows. He is intelligent, has a brilliant sense of wit and timing and turns out polished performances every time. Newton, you will never be Izzard, never in your lifetime. Your bullying tactics are a disgrace to the profession. Anyone with any intelligence: please avoid this man’s shows. He is a second rate comedian who relies on cheap jokes at the expense of others.
